Bruce Garlitz

Title:  Director IT Infrastructure
Employer:  Forest City Enterprises
Nickname/Alias:  Batman (My middle name is Wayne. Dad had a sense of humor.)

What I'm Best Known For (in the Telecom World):

Other than working for four enterprise companies that no longer exist due to acquisitions or able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, I’m best known for once stating that DECNET was the future for all communications. That was the year after I thought Token Ring was the answer.

Other Primary Areas of Expertise:

Mostly focused on Infrastructure Architecture (voice, data, video, and mobile) and how it can be absorbed into smart buildings and properties. High level strategy focus with Microsoft, Cisco, SAP, etc.

Summary of Professional Background:

Started out in application development. On to data network infrastructures. Then to managing large outsourcing engagements. Finally to directing this current Infrastructure team. Longest tenure was at BP for 17 years.

Prediction on the Future of Telecom & Telecom Managers:

There always will be a role for communications technologies (voice; video; mobile). The physical telecom infrastructure will totally migrate into the networking and server groups by 2010. Voice will reappear as just another business “application” however still requiring management like ERP.

Weirdest Thing People Usually Don't Know about Me:

Actually I’m about as normal and mainstream as they get except for those pounds of weed I just to absorb and distribute during those wonderful and free college years in the early 70’s.

When I'm not talking or doing something in relation to telecom, I'm usually...

Downloading Music; Burning and Mixing CD’s; relaxing with a good bottle of wine and cigar; singing the blues about Cleveland Sports teams and how we have not won a championship since 1968, humming the tune to Pittsburgh Sucks (actually the tune is Drew Carry’s Cleveland Rocks with the words substituted).

Book and author I'm currently reading:

The FIVE Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni and ready to start Stephen King’s Cell.

CD currently or most recently in my car stereo:

Neil Young CD burned myself – all live

The stupidest thing I've ever seen anyone do or say in relation to a phone:

Other than using the phone as a projectile device only to have the device bounce back into their face because it was still plugged in…have pretty much seen and heard it all.
