Jessica Gdowski

Title:  Editor
Employer:  The Voice Report
Nickname/Alias:  "Jennifer" and "Gdowski"

What I'm Best Known For (in the Telecom World):

Besides breaking blockbuster stories and providing wonderful instruction to telecom managers as editor of Voice Report? Racking up 2,000+ minutes a month on my cell phone.

Other Primary Areas of Expertise:

I’ve gotten really good at rolling my eyes at Jason’s sports metaphors and old movie references. I can also podcast and search the US Federal Courts database with the best of ‘em. I’ve spent a lot of time studying GPS for mobile phones, telecom managers’ salaries, federal excise taxes and RFPs for everything from PBXs to unified messaging. Otherwise, I expect my outstanding Mac & Cheese-making and babysitting skills will aid in my pursuit of a sterling journalism and telecom resume.

Summary of Professional Background:

First Place in the Newsletter Exclusive Category of the National Press Club Awards 2007 for “Avaya Practices ‘Judo’ Against Maintenance Foes”
First Place, Best Instructional Reporting in UCG’s 2006 Award for Excellence in Service Journalism for “3 Paths from Graves of Legacy Voicemail Systems” and “Lost in a Voicemail Time Warp?”
Second Place, Best Interpretive/Analytical Reporting in UCG’s 2006 Award for Excellence in Service Journalism for Voice Report’s 2006 National Salary Survey
B.S., Journalism - Northwestern University, Medill School of Journalism, 2006
Reporting/editing/photography internship at The San Diego Daily Transcript
Public affairs internship at Muscular Dystrophy Association
Reporter/editor/photographer at The Daily Northwestern

Prediction on the Future of Telecom & Telecom Managers:

Telecom managers will need to take on new skills and new technology as the industry continues to converge. The ideal telecom manager in the coming years will know the entire voice/data/video network inside and out, plus continue to be part accountant and part diplomat.

Weirdest Thing People Usually Don't Know about Me:

I hate soda.

When I'm not talking or doing something in relation to telecom, I'm usually...

Planning exotic vacations – like going home to Detroit.

Book and author I'm currently reading:

Newton’s Telecom Dictionary, 11th Edition, by Harry Newton

CD currently or most recently in my car stereo:

Who uses CDs? Or car stereos?!    Tori Amos, Paul Simon and CCR are on the iPod.

The stupidest thing I've ever seen anyone do or say in relation to a phone:

My roommate managed to memorize his girlfriend’s cell phone number, but not his. So when they broke up he accidentally gave his now-ex-girlfriend’s number to the next girl he met. She called it and he never spoke to either of them again.
