Title: MPLS Negotiation Nachos

Date: 8/16/06

Length: 21:26

Junkies: Jason Huffman, Laura McDonald, Ben Fox

Topics:

  • Podcast is preview of http://www.ipcomm2006.com conference session. Also available: Making the Transition to MPLS: Comparing Carrier Service Offerings, a 90-minute audio recording available in the store.
  • 3 recent reports at http://www.forrester.com: For 5% to 8% more, MPLS offers two to three times the bandwidth. Nearly one-third of enterprises will increase MPLS spending this year.
  • Sorry, but unlike frame relay or ATM, MPLS means no apples to apples comparison. Some charge for port into cloud, while others charge for actual services used.
  • Surprise! Because some carriers' MPLS networks are not yet complete, enterprises may have to traverse frame relay to get there.
  • Recommended approaches: Solicit MPLS RFPs 9 to 12 months before contracts expire, and ask for cost of keeping frame relay, too.
